THROWBACK ALERT
The kitty fashion from the past that raised us
If you’re a young millenial or elder gen z, you probably remember a lot of unfortunate trends. From the moustache-pocalypse of 2011 to the cold shoulders of 2016, some things just weren’t designed to last. Though aesthetics may change and tastes evolve in our constant cycle of fashion ephemera, one thing that has always stayed constant is humankind’s love for our cats. Through the decades, we’ve found creative ways to wear that love on our sleeve— literally! Join us in a fun, silly, and maybe even nostalgic retrospective on the staple pieces from a cat lover’s wardrobe in years past. You might even rediscover a lost love and use one of our affiliate links to relive the glory days!
Galaxy Meme Cats
Do you remember that period of time when it was both truly fashionable to wear galaxy print, and funny to be lol XD random? What an intersection. Nowadays, seeing someone in one of these babies either means it’s laundry day or they’re truly two steps ahead.
Pastel Goth Cat Stuff
Pastel goth... god, do you remember pastel goth? It was this particular writer’s first true foray into finding a personal style, so we at PurrPurr Fashion are still holding a candle for this unique internet-spawned subculture. There have even been rumblings of a resurgence more recently, so this is a great time to pick up some staples like this.
Cat Tights
Though their popularity has faded somewhat since their heyday in 2016, these saucy little kitties never truly left the limelight. Any ensemble finished with a peek of cute little kitty faces is sure to delight! Get the look
Cat Ear Headbands
Ariana, what are you doing here!! Who doesn’t remember that brief shining moment when it was COOL to wear cat ears to school? For all the weird kids that maybe should’ve learned not to hiss at their classmates a little sooner, this trend either felt like vindication or appropriation. Either way, in retrospect, I think we can all agree that it’s a cute touch that can make an otherwise plain outfit something special. Jazz up your next fit!
Kawaii Anime Inspired Fashion
Clothes based on Japanese street style have been around for a long time, but directly inspired pieces with the hiragana still on are a more recent phenomenon. These bold, and some would say tacky, pieces exploded during the pandemic. Being locked inside emboldens one to explore new style options, maybe. Graphic styles have fallen out of fashion in the past few years, but you’ll still find the odd true devotee in the wild.
Closing Thoughts
If nothing else, this blast from the past shows that we always have and always will love our feline friends, and jump at the chance to decorate every inch of our body with reminders of them. If you can’t take your baby with you, you can at least show everyone how serious you are about them!
